User Experience Designer

Full-time Office for National Statistics in Newport

As a user experience designer in the Digital Publishing department, you’ll help us to improve the usability, interaction and accessibility of the ONS website and the content management systems that the publishing team use. You’ll help our users to find, understand and use our content. You’ll work with the design community across ONS to create a consistent design system that meets user needs. You’ll love the web and working in the open.

Main responsibilities

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplined team to design user focussed and intuitive software.
  • Take responsibility for translating and driving through findings from users into design concepts, prototypes and production assets.
  • Work closely with development teams to ensure design is implemented faithfully and with due intent.
  • Work autonomously as required to take responsibility for proactively identifying and resolving any issues arising.
  • Deliver designs that meet web standards, ensuring that key elements are built in from the outset.
  • Contributing to the development and continual enhancement of the product.
  • Partnering with colleagues to facilitate a consistent user experience.
  • Facilitating user research (including observing and providing recommendations) and subsequently iterating design based on research outcomes.

Skills and experience

These are the skills and experiences that might be suitable for this role. An interest in solving the challenges we face is much more important than having experience in everything listed.

  • Design – experience in designing interactions for the web, mobile and/or native platforms -Design patterns and applications – experience in identifying and recommending appropriate design patterns, and creating pattern libraries and style guides.
  • Experience in sketching/concepting, design production, hand-coded HTML and CSS, and rapid prototyping.
  • Team working – experience in working within an agile, multi-disciplinary team environment, and able to deliver iterative design components (including user journeys) to the development team.
  • Software products – experience in understanding the technical side of UX including progressive enhancement, performance and accessibility.
  • User-centred design – experience in working in a user-centred design environment, conducting usability testing either directly or alongside user researchers.
  • Data informed design – experience in using data to inform design decisions including analytics findings and A/B testing.
