Interaction Designers

Full-time Office for National Statistics in Newport

Play your part in delivering a cutting edge “digital first” census in 2021. This truly unique work reaches every household and individual in England & Wales, and your work will help shape public policy and service provision for at least a decade.

Our teams are highly driven and collaborative, with cutting edge technologies and career development fundamental to everything that we do.

We need 2 Interaction Designers to work to deliver the technical capability for census field operations across a range of solutions and technologies, as well as other areas of the census programme. You’ll be working out the best way to let users interact with services, in terms of both overall flow and at the level of individual design elements. You’ll work with service managers and programme directors to develop design concepts and may have responsibility across complex services. You’ll help to set direction and embed good practice within teams, as well making key decisions based on research and understand how this research impacts others.

We are driving transformation change through new technologies and ways of working in a modern, technically focused, data driven organisation. Over the next 3 years we’re scaling up to deliver the 2021 Census, the highest traffic service in government with over 25 million users. We’re offering the opportunity to work on the latest scalable digital technologies, to ensure this incredibly high-profile project meets the needs of the widely diverse user groups.

Role responsibilities include but aren't limited to: • taking responsibility for translating and driving through findings from users into design concepts, prototypes and production assets • working closely with development teams to ensure design is implemented correctly • delivering designs that meet web standards, ensuring that key elements are built in from the outset • facilitating user research (including observing and providing recommendations) and then iterating designs based on the outcomes

Person Specification: You’ll be an expert in: • understanding users and identifying who they are and what their needs are based on evidence • translating user stories and proposing design approaches/services to meet these needs, and engaging in meaningful interactions and relationships with users • designing interactions by applying technical knowledge and experience to design or create workable prototypes, both digital and physical outputs • prototyping in code, but not necessarily producing production-ready code, and communicating effectively with developers
