Overview: Sugar Creative Studio (Sugar) is seeking a talented Game Designer to join us on a large scale, multi-year digital project to create a state of the art, immersive experience based around an iconic and globally recognised entertainment brand.

The project is an opportunity to define an entirely new depth of experience for future audiences. To achieve new qualities of immersion, we will be using a range of approaches including, immersive technologies, high-quality narrative, live immersive production events and an intelligent underlying platform that allows the user genuinely to influence how their experience unfolds.

The role will be Cardiff-based (with key stakeholders in Bristol, London and also with us in South Wales) and involve teams from at least 4 companies (including Sugar) to be managed as an overall programme. The programme is likely to last for 18-20 months minimum with the option to extend once the product is in the market.

The Game Designer will work with the Sugar team, AR Developers and Programme Lead to bring gameplay structure, insight and consistency across the whole of the narrative experience.

You will need to ensure that all gameplay aspects of the programme are of the highest quality and align smoothly with one another.

The Game Designer will drive the narrative quality and consistency across creative direction and decisions, helping to ensure an ambitious vision for the product by contributing creative insight and ideas. You will need to strike a balance between being hands-on and an overseer.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Game Designer specialising in holistic game design, feature ownership and implementation through product development.

Within this role you will:

• Be the vision holder for one or more features which span the game experience • Strive for quality and innovation while adhering to the core vision of the game • End to end feature ownership; from inception through to game release • Create high-level presentation materials for pitching concepts to product stakeholders • Ability to solve problems using game design knowledge and experience • Design and model complex game systems based on high-level concepts • Implement the feature design using industry-standard and in-house tools • Review and adjust designs based on user testing and data • Mentor junior design team members and communicate the feature across the wider team.

We need you to have:

• Proven track record of designing games from product inception through to release • Ability to evangelise features you own to multi-discipline teams and across the organisation • Understanding of a products user base and player behaviours • Experience in designing and balancing complex systems • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Organisational and workload management skills are essential for success • Empathise with different disciplines to form aligned and sympathetic concept

• You should have a product mentality; always be questioning how the product could be improved, ensuring our work is focused on the agreed outcomes, the product vision and purpose. • You should be comfortable with all stages of the product life cycle, from creative concepting, to initial experimentation and requirements gathering through to delivery and support. • Your portfolio should show that you are used to working on large projects: prioritising work streams, working across different media, working efficiently and managing your own time, presenting in meetings, fleshing out concepts, working alongside others effectively, and liaising with our large extended team to bring everything to fruition to your own exacting standards.

You'll ideally have:

• Experience at working in project managed teams in a smaller, dynamic organisation without relying on extensive resources to get things done. • The ability to articulate your thinking to colleagues, stakeholders, users, and ideally the wider design community. • Demonstrable experience from your previous projects in having to make decisions and providing the rationale to back up your choices • Evidence of having worked on creative concepts - in particular, experimenting & rapidly producing multiple concepts and prototypes • Evidence of where you took accountability for your own work and the work of those you delegated to others.
