Junior Web Developer

Full-time Big Lemon Creative in Caerphilly

Who we are

We launched a few years ago with a craving to work on our passions: to develop powerful brands and create unique websites for our awesome clients. Since launching we've taken a slight transition to focus on building awesome web applications and solving interesting UI challenges with start-ups. We can literally say that we build dreams. Which is pretty cool.

While we’re currently at two full time staff, Owen (Web Guy/Co-Founder) and Kieran (Design Guy/Co-Founder), we also have two part-time Client Liaison Managers: our dogs, Rocket and Gus. So you ideally need to get on with canines.

Our studio is at Welsh ICE in Caerphilly (10-minute walk from the station or a pop off the A470), where we’re surrounded by loads of cool businesses and brilliant people. We’re looking forward to grow our team and get some more awesome people on board that share our ethos and attitude towards work.

Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities will center around working in our small design/development team to build client projects. We’re currently working with clients like Tomos Watkin, University of Wales Trinity St David, Limitless Trampoline Park in Swansea and other local SMEs. You won’t be expected to be in communication with clients initially, but the role might develop to include this, depending on your comfort.

We use WordPress as a backend for most client brochure sites and build a custom frontend site. Initially we’ll use these projects for our new team member to get up to scratch on our processes, ethos and kind of work we do.

We’re also currently working on a few internal projects which you’ll also have the opportunity to work on. We’re really excited about the potential of these and would look for heavy input from our new team member.

Experience & Qualifications

Any experience within an agency environment (client work) would be nice, but not necessary. We also understand that many developers are self-taught, so degrees or advanced qualifications aren’t essential.

We’re more interested in what you can do and what you want to achieve. We want to see any cool things you’ve made and know what your vision is. What makes you tick? Why are you a developer? What is your inspiration?

Skills

The following skills will be essential to your everyday workflow:

  • PHP (preferably with WordPress, but not essential)
  • HTML5 & CSS (SASS)
  • Basic JavaScript (and jQuery when the situation needs it)
  • A recognition and appreciation of good design
  • Git (and BitBucket mostly)

We will provide a MacBook Pro and additional required accessories to help you work as proficiently and efficiently as possible.

A key part of web development is to continue learning new technologies. As well as the required skills above, we eventually aim for you to become familiar with the following skills, which we use regularly in projects:

  • Frontend JavaScript frameworks like React, Angular, etc
  • MySQL and MongoDB
  • iOS and Android development
  • Wireframe and UI design

Working Hours

This is a full time opportunity (37.5 hours per week). We offer flexible working hours, but ask that you spend some core hours at the studio during the day. Opportunities to work from home/remotely will also be available in due course.

Salary

The salary will be £14,000 (pro-rata per annum) for the initial 6-month probation period. There will be an opportunity to negotiate further at the end of the initial 6 months. We’re also pretty flexible on annual leave (we can discuss this in the interview).

Your Application

Please note: as this is a government funded program we can only accept applications from candidates ages 16 to 24. However, our plans of expansion go beyond this, so if you feel you’re a particularly good fit, please send your details anyway.

To apply for this position please email [email protected]

We’re interested in who you are, what you can do, and where you want to be. We understand you won’t be with Big Lemon for your whole career, so we need to know that your vision of progression aligns with ours so we can help you take steps to achieving your dreams.

If shortlisted, you will be asked to take a quick (simple) online test to show you understand the basics. We’ll also invite you to an informal one-to-one interview at our studio where we can grab a coffee.

Please send over your CV along with a short introduction about who you are and any info you feel is relevant (any past work you’ve been involved with, previous projects you’ve built, plugins you’ve helped develop or things you’ve launched. A GitHub account could be perfect.)

We can’t wait to hear from you.
