Data Visualisation Designer

Full-time Office for National Statistics in Newport

The Office for National Statistics is committed to improving the communication of its statistics with a ‘digital by default’ approach that always starts with putting our ‘users first’. We are looking for an Data Visualisation Designer to contribute to a range of web based products including visual.ons.gov.uk and ons.gov.uk.

Working in a multi-disciplined Digital Content Team, the post-holder will support the creation of high quality data visualisations (e.g. charts, maps and infographics). The role also involves the production of creative interactive products which aims to connect ONS data with its users in innovative ways. You’ll have excellent design skills and an understanding of how to adjust your design style to different audiences.

The ideal candidate will have practical experience in designing with data and a design related degree. You’ll be full of ideas and have experience producing work for multiple digital channels including social media.

We’re looking for people with a variety of skills:

• Experience of web technologies such as HTML5/CSS, and scripting languages and libraries such as JavaScript or D3js

• Excellent portfolio of work

• Solid practical experience of using industry software Adobe CC

• The ability to ‘design with data’, using effective data visualisation techniques

• Awareness of the characteristics of effective digital content, including UX/UI, accessibility and responsive design.

• Great eye for detail, strong visual design instincts and be able to give design direction to other members of the team

• An understanding of how to use insight from research and best practice when developing designs

• Able to clearly articulate and justify design decisions to both users and internal clients

• Able to work on multiple projects of varying complexities, meeting deadlines, managing team workloads and working under pressure

• Experience of working in agile or multi-disciplinary teams

• Stays up-to-date with industry fashions and trends

• Confidence working with (and interpreting) statistics, including an awareness of techniques for adapting the presentation to different audiences.
