Web App Developer

Full-time Big Lemon Creative in Caerphilly

Who we are

We launched a few years ago with a craving to work on our passions: to build awesome web and native apps, create unique websites, and develop powerful brands for our awesome clients. We love getting our teeth into interesting challenges - using bots, automation and modern technology to deliver the best services and products. We can literally say that we build dreams. Which is pretty cool.

While we’re currently at four full time staff, we also have two part-time Client Liaison Managers: our dogs, Rocket and Gus. So you ideally need to get on with canines. Our studio is at Welsh ICE in Caerphilly (10-minute walk from the station or a pop off the A470), where we’re surrounded by loads of cool businesses and brilliant people. We’re looking forward to growing our team and getting some more awesome people on board that share our ethos and attitude towards work.

Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities will center around working in our design/development team to build client projects. We’re currently working with clients like Tomos Watkin, University of Wales Trinity St David, Admiral, Limitless Trampoline Parks and loads of other local SMEs. You won’t be expected to be in communication with clients initially, but the role might develop to include this, depending on your comfort.

Most web applications and static websites we build have a React.js frontend, with an API driven CMS (like Contentful orMoltin) or a custom built Laravel API. We’re expecting this position to focus mostly on the frontend tech, but if you feel that you’re better suited to backend technologies then we’re open to having a conversation about that position. We’re mostly looking for the right person.

We’re also currently working on a few internal projects which you’ll also have the opportunity to work on. We’re really excited about the potential of these and would look for heavy input from our new team member.

Experience & Qualifications

Any experience within an agency environment (client work) would be nice, but not necessary. We also understand that many developers are self-taught, so degrees or advanced qualifications aren’t essential.

We’re more interested in what you can do and what you want to achieve. We want to see any cool things you’ve made and know what your vision is. What makes you tick?

Why are you a developer? What is your inspiration?

Skills

The following requirements will be essential to your everyday workflow: Great communication as part of a team Contribution to project direction and ideas The willingness to learn and better your abilities A recognition and appreciation of good design Comfortable in managing your own workload with guidance

We’d expect frontend candidates to have experience with a JavaScript framework (preferably React.js), leading with user-first development. A strong eye for design will be pretty important and the user flow built into everything you do.

If you feel that you’re more backend driven then we would expect some experience with OOP PHP >= 5.4 programming (hopefully Laravel, but not essential) or Node.js (with express), with MySQL or SQLITE. We use both for various projects, so either is an advantage.

Experience with the following tech would make you stand out, but aren’t essential: GraphQL (client or server) React Native Contentful or Moltin APIs

We will provide a MacBook Pro and additional required accessories to help you work as proficiently and efficiently as possible.

A key part of web development is to continue learning new technologies. As well as the required skills above, we eventually aim for you to become proficient with a variety of tech stacks. We’re not bound to any technologies and appreciate using the right tool for the job.

Salary & Working Hours

In return for 37.5 hours a week – flexible working hours – you’ll get a salary of £18,000 - £24,000 (depending on experience) plus annual leave.

We offer flexible working hours, but ask that you spend some core hours at the studio during the day. Opportunities to work from home/remotely will also be available in due course. We’re also pretty flexible on annual leave (we can discuss this in the interview). Your Application

To apply for this position please email [email protected] and quote “Web App Developer” in the subject of the email.

We’re interested in who you are, what you can do, and where you want to be. We understand you won’t be with Big Lemon for your whole career, so we need to know that your vision of progression aligns with ours so we can help you take steps to achieving your dreams.

Please send over your CV along with a short introduction about who you are and any info you feel is relevant (any past work you’ve been involved with, previous projects you’ve built, plugins you’ve helped develop or things you’ve launched. A GitHub account could be perfect.)

If shortlisted, we’ll invite you to an informal one-to-one interview at our studio where we can grab a coffee and take a look around.

We can’t wait to hear from you.

Oh, and no agencies, please! We're doing fine and aren't interested. Thank you.
